Mixcloud charts and tags guide

Mixcloud Charts Explained: How Tags and Ranking Eligibility Work

Michal Kovach

Mixcloud charts are a discovery system organized around genres and tags. They can help a newly public show appear in front of listeners browsing a specific style, but chart eligibility has rules creators need to understand.

Charts Are Connected to Upload Tags

Mixcloud states that shows are entered into charts associated with the tags used on the upload. That makes tag selection part of your discovery strategy, not just metadata added after publishing.

Use Broad and Specific Genres Together

Mixcloud recommends combining broad genres such as techno with more specific tags such as acid techno. The goal is accuracy: describe the content in a way that places it in relevant discovery categories.

Public Shows Have a Seven-Day Eligibility Window

A show can be eligible to enter charts for up to seven days from when it is first made available to all listeners. This makes the release window important for promotion and audience activity.

Private Uploads Do Not Enter Charts

Private shows are not eligible for charts. If a private upload is later made public, Mixcloud says it can become eligible for the first seven days it is visible to everyone.

Subscriber-Only Exclusives Follow a Similar Rule

Exclusive shows cannot enter charts while access is restricted to subscribers. When an Exclusive becomes public to everyone for the first time, it can become chart-eligible for seven days as a newly public upload.

Do Not Stuff Irrelevant Tags

Using unrelated genres may put a show in front of the wrong audience. Even if it creates impressions, poor audience fit is unlikely to support useful listening or follower conversion. Tag the music that is actually in the show.

Coordinate Promotion With the Chart Window

If charts are important to your release, publish when you can actively promote. Use your social profiles, newsletter, website embed, collaborators, and existing followers during the initial public period.

Charts Are Only One Discovery Route

Followers, external embeds, Spotlights, live streams, collaborations, and direct sharing also matter. A show that does not chart can still accumulate meaningful long-term listening.
